Julio Teheran pitched six scoreless innings on Sunday

After Saturday’s marathon, the Atlanta Braves bench players were able to get a 2-1 win over the Washington Nationals on Sunday afternoon.  The series win for the Braves cuts their magic number down to 24 games.

Brian McCann, Jason Heyward, Justin Upton, and Andrelton Simmons all sat out after the long game on Saturday.

The Braves got their only 2 runs in the game’s 1st inning.  Freddie Freeman picked up his 82nd RBI of the season with a single to center off Gio Gonzalez.  B.J. Upton scored for the Braves 1st run.

They added another run in the inning on a single by Chris Johnson.  Phil Gosselin, who picked up his first ML hit, scored for the Braves 2nd run.

The score stayed that way for a while on Sunday afternoon.  It was not until the 7th inning when the Nationals finally got on the scoreboard.  Jayson Werth continued his great month with a single to center.  Anthony Rendon scored while Bryce Harper was thrown out at 3rd.

In the 9th, it came down to Craig Kimbrel vs. Bryce Harper.  Kimbrel was able to strike out Harper on a check swing to end the ballgame.

Game MVP:

Julio Teheran: 6 IP, 3 BB, and 5 K’s

It was great to see Teheran pitch well on Sunday afternoon.  The Braves could not afford to go to the bullpen again early on Sunday.  Teheran was not his best, but did a great job pitching out of jams.

Freddie Freeman and Phil Gosselin were the only 2 Braves that recorded more than 1 hit on Sunday.  It was great for the Braves to get a win, while they sat most of their starting players.

After an off day, the Braves will head to New York, as they look to win their 8th straight series.  They will have a tough one Tuesday night as Zack Wheeler (5-2, 3.48) will be on the mound for the Mets.  Brandon Beachy (2-0, 4.50) will be pitching for the Braves.
