If you remember back to his last start, you will remember that Julio Teheran was not too impressive. He did not continue that trend on Sunday night. Teheran was sharp as he and 3 other Braves pitchers shut out the Giants, 3-0.
The Upton brother’s combined to score Atlanta’s second run of the game. In the 3rd Inning, B.J. Upton doubled, which allowed his brother to score from 2nd. The Braves managed to load the bases in the inning, but could only plate the 1 run. Upton’s score gave the Braves a 2-0 lead after the game’s 1st 3 innings.
That is when Julio Teheran really took the game over. In the 4th inning, the Giants loaded the bases against Teheran. The Giants did not get a run in the inning because of a great diving catch by Justin Upton in left field.
The Giants also loaded them up against Teheran in the 6th inning. Teheran once again pitched out of trouble as the Giants were again held scoreless.
Teheran was special on the mound. He ended with 6 IP, 0 ER, 1 BB, and 8 K’s. The win improved Teheran’s record in his rookie season to 5-3.
The Braves were able to add an insurance run in the 6th inning. Ramiro Pena reached 3rd when his single was misplayed by Giants left fielder, Andres Torres. On the very next play pinch-hitter Jordan Shafer laid down a sacrifice to get Pena in from 3rd. The run ended the games scoring with the Braves up 3-0.
Freddie Freeman continued his hot hitting with a 3-4 night. Over his past 23 games, Freeman is 34-91 (.347 Avg).
The win gives the Braves increases their lead in the NL East to 6.5 games over the Nationals.
The Braves will play 5 games in the next 4 days as they welcome the Mets to Atlanta.
