For the second consecutive game, Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann will sit out with a sore knee. Evan Gattis will again catch and bat clean-up.
According to Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter Carroll Rogers, McCann told manager Fredi Gonzalez that he aggravated the knee catching Brandon Beachy before Friday night’s game.
Rogers quoted McCann as saying:
“I tried to play through it last year and it kept getting worse and worse and worse. I just want to make sure that I don’t push it when I don’t need to.”
McCann is hoping to be back on Monday and says that he experienced knee soreness last year. It could be just an inflammation that crops up now and then, but when you hear something like this, you hold your breath that it may inevitably turn out to be more serious.
McCann does say he is able to pinch-hit so perhaps it is something that just bothers him when he squats.
Gerald Laird, who was activated earlier in the day from the disabled list, has come back none too soon, should McCann’s knee soreness linger.
