The Atlanta Braves farm system has done a great job over the years of producing high-quality major league players. In recent years the system has produced Freddie Freeman, Jason Heyward, Andrelton Simmons, Evan Gattis, Mike Minor, Julio Teheran, Kris Medlen and Craig Kimbrel. Many other Braves players that have provided significant contributions were developed on Braves minor league teams.
The Atlanta Braves started off their last inter-league series of 2013 with a victory on Tuesday night. The new guy, Elliot Johnson, and the Braves bullpen, came up big as they shut out the Cleveland Indians, 2-0.

The Atlanta Braves have acquired starting pitcher Freddy Garcia from the Baltimore Orioles. The trade will not cost the Braves any players, Garcia was obtained for cash considerations.
Garcia, 36 will be sent to Triple-A Gwinnett and assume a spot in the starting rotation. This season Garcia was 3-5 in 11 appearances (10 starts) with a 5.77 ERA with the Orioles.

The Atlanta Braves have announced that utility infielder Tyler Pastornicky will have season-ending knee surgery on Monday, August 19. Pastornicky hurt his knee Wednesday night when he collided with Braves right fielder Jason Heyward while chasing a pop fly.
Pastornickyk suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
The Braves have purchased the contract of infielder Phil Gosselin from their Triple-A affiliate in Gwinnett to take Pastornicky’s place. Gosselin will be in uniform for Friday night’s game against the Washington Nationals and wear number 59.

The Atlanta Braves continue to get healthy as they activated catcher Gerald Laird off the disabled list and optioned outfielder Todd Cunningham to Triple-A Gwinnett. Laird will be in uniform and available to play against the Marlins Sunday.
Laird went on the disabled list August 3, retroactive to July 26, with a kidney stone ailment.

Atlanta Braves outfielder B.J. Upton was activated off the disabled list and will start today against the Phillies. Upton will play center field and bat seventh.
Upton went on the disabled list with a strained right hamstring injury suffered while trying to make a running catch.
Catcher Gerald Laird has been placed on the disabled list with a kidney stone problem to make room for B.J. Upton.

Traded three different times since August 2010 then designated for assignment by Boston last fall, the Braves picked up reliever David Carpenter off of waivers on November 30. The move seemed to be fairly inconsequential at the time, as there was little room in the loaded Atlanta bullpen. The former West Virginia Mountaineer seemed destined for Gwinnett for the duration of the 2013 season.

Atlanta Braves outfielder B.J. Upton made his first rehab appearance Wednesday night, as he recovers from a right thigh strain he suffered on July 12. Upton, playing for the Braves Triple-A Gwinnett affiliate, went 0 for 3 with a strikeout and handled four chances in the outfield in five innings of work.
Upton led off and played his usual center field position. He was replaced in the sixth inning by Greg Golson, a former Rockies farm hand, who was playing his first game for the Gwinnett Braves.
