The Braves focus coming into this season was to outdistance the Washington Nationals and Philadelphia Phillies to win the NL East. The Braves recent 14-game winning streak has opened up a huge lead in the NL East and changed the focus. Talk lately has turned to battling the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals, for the best record in the National League.
The prize for the best NL regular season record, would be home field advantage through the National League Championship Series.
If the Atlanta Braves look in their rear view mirror, they will see the Los Angeles Dodgers driving at breakneck speed. After a very slow start, Los Angeles has been the hottest team in baseball, the past couple months. They have just overtaken the Cardinals and at 68-50, sit 2 1/2 games behind the Pirates and 3 1/2 behind the Braves
The Braves have the best record in the National League and have played great baseball. But the Dodgers have been on a relentless march towards owning the best record in the NL.
Los Angeles, and their rookie sensation Yasiel Puig, have won six in a row and after a slow start, they are a major league best 30-7, in July and August. While the Pirates and Cardinals are both good teams, the Dodgers are in another league.
Home field advantage through the NLCS would be nice, but the biggest reason to have the best record in the National League heading into the playoffs, would be to play the wildcard team in the first round, rather than the red-hot Los Angeles Dodgers.
