The Atlanta Braves announced in the press box during the first inning of the Braves/Cincinnati Reds game that Evan Gattis would begin a rehab assignment Friday night with the Gwinnett Braves.
The G-Braves will play a 7:05 game at Durham.
The rookie catcher, who is nicknamed “El Oso Blanco” will be the designated hitter. A timetable has not yet been given on when he will play in the field.
Gattis injured his right oblique against the New York Mets in a game that featured a 4-hour rain delay. I still wonder how much that lengthy delay may have contributed to Gattis’ injury, as the players warmed up several times during the game, then had to cool their heels until play resumed.
Gattis is hitting .252 on the season, with 14 homers and 37 RBI, in only 163 at bats.
In other injury news: right fielder Jason Heyward left Thursday night’s game against the Reds with a strained right hamstring. Heyward incurred the injury in the second inning, while sliding into third base.
