Heyward Hit in Face By Pitch

No word yet on Heyward’s condition

Atlanta Braves right fielder Jason Heyward was hit in the face with a pitch by New York Mets starter Jonathan Niese in Wednesday afternoon’s game.

The left-handed Niese came up and in with a fastball as the left-handed Heyward leaned into the plate.  Heyward was able to turn away from the pitch, but it caught him on the right side of the jaw.

Heyward went down at the plate for a couple of minutes as stunned players stood and watched.  Fortunately, Heyward was able to get up under his own power as Braves trainer Jeff Porter led him to the dugout.  Heyward will be having x-rays at the stadium, no word yet on their results.

Jordan Schafer came into the game to run for Heyward and scored the Braves’ first run.  He stayed in the game to take Heyward’s position in right field.

Heyward has been on fire since being inserted into lead-off spot in the batting order.  This would be a huge blow to the Braves if Heyward is out for an extended period.
