Atlanta Braves outfielder Justin Upton is only 3 home runs away from tying the all-time April record for home runs. Upton now has 11 home runs this season, Albert Pujols (2006) and Alex Rodriguez (2007) are tied for the all-time record with 14.
Upton has already eclipsed the Braves all-time record for April homers. His 11th round-tripper against Colorado on Tuesday passed Ryan Klesko (1996) and Andres Galarraga (1998 and 200) who had held the record with 10.
When Upton blasted his 10th April homer in the 1st game of the just completed Colorado series, he became only the 18th player in Major League history to reach 10 home runs before his team had played 20 games. At 25 years of age, he is the second youngest. Mickey Mantle was 24 when he accomplished the feat in 1956.
Upton didn’t hit his 10th home run last season until August 27 in his 117th game, and 420th at bat.
The Braves play 5 more games in April, 3 this weekend against the Detroit Tigers in Detroit, and 2 against the Washington Nationals (Monday and Tuesday) at home.
