More Spice in Braves Starting Line-Up

Braves right fielder Jason Heyward

If variety is the spice of life, then as a Braves fan you have to love manager Fredi Gonzalez‘s line-up selections.  They are rarely the same two days in a row.

The left-handed hitting Jordan Schafer will start in center field and bat lead-off today against Dodgers’ right-hander, Matt Nagli.  Schafer is hitting .302 on the season, with a .405 OBP and a team high six stolen bases.

The Braves are scheduled to face right-handers all three games against the Twins this week (Monday Tuesday and Wednesday), be interesting to see how many of those games that Gonzalez opts to play Schafer in center field over B.J. Upton.

Ramiro Pena gives Dan Uggla a day off at second base, and Juan Francisco starts at third base against the right-handed Dodgers starter.

With Heyward back in the line-up batting in the two-hole, Gonzalez has Simmons hitting sixth.  Conventional wisdom would be that the power-hitting Heyward would hit in the middle of the order, and the line drive hitting Simmons would hit up in the order.  But I’ve always liked having a left-handed hitting pull hitter batting second, to exploit the hole on the right side of the infield, when the lead-off man is on first base.

This line-up is pending approval by Mother Nature.  Just received a “severe alert” notification on my cell phone regarding flash flood warnings.
