Andrelton Simmons‘ walk off single lifted the Atlanta Braves over the Milwaukee Brewers, 3-2 on Tuesday night.
Evan Gattis tied the game up in the 4th inning. Gattis doubled to deep center field in the 4th. Freddie Freeman scored, but Gattis was thrown out at 3rd, as he tried advancing on the throw to the plate. However, the game was tied 1-1.
The Brewers grabbed the lead back, when Jeff Blanchi hit a solo home run off Freddy Garcia. Blanci’s home run to left field came in the 5th inning.
Freddie Freeman continued his MVP chase with another RBI in the 6th inning. He singled to right field to once again tie the game up. This time, the game was tied up at 2.
Things stayed that way until the 9th inning. After Craig Kimbrel pitched the top half of the 9th, the Braves had a chance to win it in the bottom of the inning. With the Upton brothers aboard, Andrelton Simmons came through with a huge single to right center field. Justin Upton scored on the hit from Simmons and the Braves won 3-2. The walk off hit for Simmons was the 3rd in his career.
Freddy Garcia: 6.2 IP, 2 ER, 1 BB, and 7 K’s
Andrelton Simmons was the hero, but I have to give the game MVP to Freddy Garcia. The Braves starter gave up 2 runs, but did a great job pitching out of trouble. He kept things close for the Braves, and gave the offense a chance to make something happen. Garcia did not get a W but deserves a lot of credit for Tuesday’s game.
Alex Wood (0.1 IP), David Carpenter (1 IP), and Craig Kimbrel (1 IP, W) all pitched really well in relief of Garcia. They all made sure they gave the Braves offense a chance to come back, and they did.
Tuesday’s win is the 93rd on the season for the Braves and keeps them at least ½ a game in front of the Cardinals for the NL best record.
With only 5 games left in the season, the same 2 teams are at it again tomorrow night. Though the Braves have clinched the NL East, they need to keep winning and clinch the NL best record. Paul Maholm (10-10, 4.44) will be taking on Kyle Lohse (10-10, 3.51) at 7:10 tomorrow night.
